South Port
Originally incorporated in 1792 as Smithville, Southport is a charming historic village tucked away just below Wilmington and just a short trip to the South Carolina state line. Explorers first came to this area in the early 1500’s and the famous pirate Stede Bonnet, also known as the “Gentleman Pirate”, used Southport as a hideaway until he was captured in a nearby creek. Much of low country history was played out along Southport’s waterfront from the Revolutionary War to WWII. As you walk under centuries old live oaks and pass historic homes that have been lovingly preserved, you will find that this community is committed to maintaining its historic charm. It would be understandable if you experience a sense of déjà vu walking around the village. Several well known movies and TV shows have been filmed here – "I Know What You Did Last Summer", "The Wedding" "Walk to Remember", "Crimes of the Heart", "Summer Catch", and "Dawson’s Creek" to name just a few.
Southport hosts a number of festivals throughout the year and is host to the largest NC 4th of July Festival. It also has a thriving arts community with theater, art galleries, and many local and national authors live in Southport. The area also abounds in marinas and has been providing sailors and fisherman with a snug harbor and great local fishing. The natural beauty of living on the Intracoastal Waterway combined with unique stores, great restaurants, and friendly neighbors make Southport a special place to live!
